Over the last week, I have devoured the Loxwood series by Grace Wilkinson. Some of you may already know about how much I love to get comfortable and dive into a good equestrian read and the Loxwood series certainly fits the bill.

The Loxwood series, set in Newmarket England, follows the story of 17 year old exercise rider, Georgia James. While track work offers Georgia an entry into the equestrian world as well as helping to build up her bank her passion lies in the sport of eventing.

From the first moment Georgia lays eyes on Loxwood she falls in love and knows that he will have a bright future when his racing days are over. When Loxwoods owners come to see him run and realise he will never be a successful racehorse, Loxwood is gifted to Georgia.

The five books in the series follow the highs and lows of Georgia and Loxwoods journey together. This is perhaps what I love most about these books. It is not a whimsical story of smooth sailing where girl and pony experience untold success almost instantly. In the pages of the story author Grace Wilkinson brings Georgia’s ambition to life and provides readers with an insight into the reality of life with horses. From reading the books it is evident that Grace Wilkinson has spent much time in the horse world. Unlike other horse books, the Loxwood series in grounded in the reality of life with horses, the heartbreak, the small vicotories and progress. Georgia and Loxwood do not instantly rise to fame and fortune, they experience ups and downs.

While the Loxwood series was easy to read, it was by no means lightweight. Grace also deals sensitively with several topical issues the dangers of eventing including rider death on course and the darker side of the racing industry.

If you are a horse lover, I cannot recommend these books highly enough. Best of all they are available on the Amazon Kindle store meaning that you don’t have to wait! You can find novel 1 – Loxwood here.

You can follow Grace Wilkinson on Twitter and Facebook.

  • These books are on my too-read list…and they’ve been there for far too long! Thanks for reminding me to give them a go. If you are looking for more equestrian reads, flick me an email at nzponywriter@gmail.com and I can send you some of my Kindle books if you would like to read them 🙂 They are all set in New Zealand and focus mostly on show jumping. Cheers.
