As a U.S. Marine Corp Vietnam-era veteran and an African-American cowgirl, my journey in the equestrian world and dedication to community service converged in the founding of Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. (EHI) in 1984. Horses have always been an integral part of my life, from my earliest memories of riding neighboring horses to the tranquil moments shared with friends on horseback, a practice that offered respite and relaxation.

The genesis of EHI arose from a simple yet profound question posed by an inner-city child: “Is that a real horse?” This innocent inquiry ignited a passion within me to bridge the gap for urban youth, providing them with equal access to resources, equine-based programs, and therapeutic opportunities previously reserved for their suburban counterparts. The vision was to enrich lives and reshape futures through the powerful interaction between humans and horses.

EHI stands as a regional trailblazer, offering Culturally Competent Equine Assisted Therapy and Psychotherapy, facilitating mental health professionals and students to earn Continuing Education Credits sanctioned by NASW/CT. Moreover, our organization provides certification courses in Culturally Competent Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (CEAT), training the next wave of equine-assisted therapy practitioners.

Operating from the Equestrian and Therapeutic Center nestled within the historic Keney Park—a masterpiece conceived by Frederick Law Olmstead—our facilities boast 693 acres of pristine landscapes and 25 miles of serene trails. With expansive stables, indoor and outdoor riding rings, we offer public lessons, advanced training in disciplines like jumping and dressage, and a nurturing environment for both personal and professional growth.

My journey, spanning from military service to equestrian advocacy, embodies a commitment to fostering opportunities, inclusivity, and empowerment for underserved communities. Through Ebony Horsewomen, Inc., I endeavor to continue inspiring and transforming lives by creating a space where everyone, irrespective of their background, benefits from the profound connection between humans and horses.
